Stay Independent: A Healthy Aging Series is a nutrition and wellness program offered through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach for adults age 60 and older. The program is being offered at two locations in Greene County starting Thursday, April 27: Churdan public library in the mornings and Ever Greene Ridge in the afternoons.
“Nutrition risk assessments of older Iowans living in Iowa revealed that nearly one out of four are at risk for malnutrition or are malnourished,” said Renee Sweers, a human sciences specialist in food and health.
The key behaviors placing these adults at risk are limited intakes of produce and protein. In addition, most are not physically active, which can increase their risk of sarcopenia, or age-related muscle wasting, Sweers said.
“Stay Independent” provides research-based nutrition and wellness information intended to help adults age 60 and older reduce their nutritional risk through lifestyle changes. The program includes four lessons designed to meet the needs of older Iowans.
The first lesson is on Healthy Eating for Brain Health. The three other sessions include strategies for eating enough protein and fruits and vegetables, physical activity and Cooking for One or Two. “Each class includes interactive class discussion, hands-on activities and taste testing healthy recipes,” Sweers said.
The 4-session Stay Independent series will be offered four Thursdays, April 27, May 4, May 11, and May 18, at the Churdan public library from 9:30 to 10:30 am, and at Ever Greene Ridge in Jefferson from 2:15 to 3:15 pm. Cost is $10 per person.
